Irazu Volcano, Cartago This tour begins with a beautiful drive from San José to Cartago, the original capital city of Costa Rica. As you climb the slopes of the Irazu Volcano, you pass through one of the richest agricultural regions in the country. You will marvel at the brilliant green hues of the farmlands that have been fed for many years by the rich volcanic soil. On the way back, enjoy a cup of rich Costa Rican hot chocolate or coffee. Cartago is also the home of the Basilica of our Lady of Angels, Patron Saint of Costa Rica.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve Passing the city of Alajuela and other picturesque small country towns, you will arrive at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Established in 1972, the Preserve covers over 10,500 hectares, more than 90% of which is virgin forest. Its biological diversity is unmatched and includes over 2,500 plant species (420 types of orchids alone!), 100 species of mammals (including Spider, Howler and White Faced monkeys), 400 bird species, 120 reptilian and amphibian species, and thousands of insects. Visitors can enter the Preserve on a natural history walk, or explore on their own. After your nature walk you can share your experience with friends as you relax over a traditional Costa Rican lunch.
Carara Transition Forest The route to the Carara Transition Forest winds toward the Pacific Coast, taking you along an old Spanish route dating back to Colonial times. The Carara Forest covers a low mountainous area of 4,700 hectares in a climate zone that transitions from the dry north Costa Rican pacific
to the very humid coast of the south. Carara is an important nesting area for the Scarlet Macaw and during the dry season (January-May) it is common to see them flying around the park. You will also likely encounter Guams, Toucans, and Trogons. Near the entrance to the park you will see huge crocodiles basking in the Tarcoles River. As you walk with your guide through the giant tree-lined trails, you may also see Howler and White Faced Monkeys, Coatis, Sloths, Armadillos, Iquanas, and a wide variety of lizards and frogs.
